The Cahuilla Band of Indians, in partnership with GRID Alternatives, will install residential solar energy systems on eight Cahuilla Tribal member’s homes.
These low-income families were chosen to help reduce the financial burden spent on electricity costs. In addition to the economic benefit of cost savings through solar, the community will benefit from the workforce training opportunities provided by GRID Alternatives Inland Empire. Increased knowledge and awareness concerning solar power on the Reservation will only help to increase overall Tribal capacity as efforts continue to progress in the vision of a renewable and sustainable energy sector. The impact of cost savings generated through this project directly aligns with the TSAF priority area of generating significant cost savings. In addition, providing an alternate, local, and Tribally owned source of energy for elder Tribal members it will contribute to the Tribe’s sovereignty. The opportunity provided by TSAF will allow for the Tribe’s residents the first steps in furthering solar on the Reservation, and ultimately working to strengthen energy sovereignty to the greatest extent possible.
